Here We Go Again

Arriving in Melbourne at the end of the 2009 ride

Well it's that time of the year again and I am happy to introduce you to the official blog of Pedal 4 Parkinson's 2010.

While the majority of the route will remain the same, traveling down the Princes Highway, there will be a small change to the ride this year where by we pop in to Canberra on our way down. As you can see from the rundown tabulated below we will not be taking any extra days for this instead we have packed more kilometers in to each day. Take some time to look through where we will be and when and if you have any ideas surrounding what we can to and who we can contact to further raise awareness in these areas please contact me.

Congratulations on your efforts. I have PD, live in UK and have twice cycled from end to end of the country (1000 miles)to raise money to fund research into a cure. I am the founder of pedalforparkinsons.co.uk. We've raised £45,000 so far. Keep in touch. Exercise is half the treatment.

About Pedal4Parkinson's

A few years ago my father was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. For those of you who are familiar with this disease you will know and understand the lack of knowledge both on a social and medical front. As for those who are not aware it is a very hard and painful thing to deal with on a day to day basis and it is very difficult to watch someone you love and admire go through, if you would like to read more about the disease you can visit the Parkinson's Australia web page at www.parkinsons.org.au

Over time I became frustrated and depressed at the fact that there was nothing i could do to help my dad. I have never been one to sit back and just watch as things fall apart, especially when it involves someone as dear and important to me as my father. So I while I could not cure my dad I felt there had to be something I could do to support him and anyone else in the same position. That is where Pedal for Parkinson's came in.

When my father was diagnosed he was told that a way in which he could slow progression of the disease was to eat healthy and get exercise, as a result of this both my mother and father got into cycling. Be it early mornings before work, weekend outings with a picnic or even participation in organised rides like the Great Victorian Bike Ride my parents would be there ready and raring to go.

Due to this developed passion for cycling my parents had developed I saw it as only fitting I did a cycle to support the cause. So on January the 9th I will once again be leaving the Sydney Opera House with fellow cyclists and beginning the long journey to Melbourne along the Princes Highway. We will be stopping at a range of places along the way and will continue to update details as these are finalised.
